Workout Buddy Bingo: Move More Together

Everything is better with a friend, and that includes exercise.

It's easy to skip a workout when it's just you and your good intentions. It's much harder to bail when someone is waiting for you at the trailhead. A workout buddy brings accountability, laughs and a little healthy competition, and makes movement feel less like a task and more like time with someone you like.

The Workout Buddy card has 34 squares built around moving with other people: friends, family, coworkers and even strangers. Whether you're a gym regular or just getting started, there's a square for you.

How to Play

Tick off squares as you complete them. Go for a row, a column or a diagonal, or try to fill the whole card. Many squares work for a quick 10-minute activity, so you can play even on a busy week. Tip: Invite your buddy to play along with their own card. Comparing progress is half the fun.

Get the Plan in Motion

The hardest part is often getting started. These squares help you lock in a plan:

  • Send a "let's move" text. One message can start it all.
  • Invite a friend to a workout. Make the first move.
  • Plan a workout date on the calendar. If it's scheduled, it happens.
  • Be someone's accountability buddy. Check in and cheer each other on.
  • Pick a workout song for a friend. Build a playlist together.
  • Carpool to a workout. Share the ride and the motivation.

Friendly Competition

A little rivalry keeps things lively:

  • Challenge someone to a plank-off. How long can you hold it?
  • Hold a wall sit contest. Thighs will burn, laughter guaranteed.
  • Race a friend up the stairs. Quick, simple and fun.
  • Do a team step challenge. Combine your steps and hit a goal together.

Try Something New Together

New activities feel easier when you have company:

  • Join a fitness class. Group energy is contagious.
  • Try a friend's favourite workout. Step into their world.
  • Do a workout swap with a friend. You pick one, they pick one.
  • Try a partner exercise. Medicine ball passes and partner squats are a good start.
  • Try a rec league or drop-in game. Easy ways to meet people.
  • Try a sport with friends. Pickleball, volleyball or anything that gets you moving.
  • Hit a new trail together. Explore somewhere you haven't been.
  • Teach someone an exercise. Sharing what you know is a great way to learn.

Easy, Social Movement

Not every workout has to be intense. These squares mix movement with conversation:

  • Go on a coffee walk. Grab a drink and stroll.
  • Walk and talk on a phone call. Catch up while you step.
  • Take a dog for a walk with a friend. Four legs make better company.
  • Walk at lunch with a coworker. Clear your head midday.
  • Work out with a coworker. Make the office week healthier.
  • Do a virtual workout with a friend. Distance is no excuse.
  • Do a group stretch. Wind down together.

Family and Play

Movement is a fun way to connect with the people at home:

  • Hit the park with kids or nieces/nephews. Swings and slides count.
  • Take a family walk. Everyone gets fresh air.
  • Play catch or throw a frisbee. Simple and fun.
  • Play tag or a backyard game. Run around like a kid again.

Cheer and Celebrate

Encouragement is a powerful motivator:

  • Cheer on a stranger's workout. A kind word can make someone's day.
  • Cheer on someone else's workout. Be the loudest supporter.
  • Share a workout photo. Show off the effort.
  • Match workout outfits with a friend. Bonus style points.
  • Reward your workout partner with a healthy treat. Smoothies and fruit are a great start.

Tips for Finding and Keeping a Buddy

  1. Start with someone you already see. A coworker, neighbour or friend is an easy first ask.
  2. Pick activities you both enjoy. Fun keeps you coming back.
  3. Be reliable. Show up when you say you will.
  4. Keep it flexible. A 15-minute walk still counts.
  5. Celebrate together. Every row is a win for both of you.

Better Together

You don't need a gym membership or a perfect plan to get moving with someone. A text, a walk and a little encouragement is enough to start. Grab the card, pick a buddy and see how many squares you can tick off together.

Happy moving!
